Lady Bosses Leaning Into The Female Future
by Liz Jansen, Co-Founder & Executive Director
Starting Women's History Month off with a Tweet from male celebrity curmudgeon, Marc Maron. Weird, right? Definitely. 100%.
But the thing is, I keep thinking about this Tweet. I couldn't help but think of it after the shooting at Michigan State University, the environmental catastrophe in Ohio, the murder of British teen Brianna Ghey...the list goes on and on.
As I reflect on Women's History Month, I'm thinking about all the groups and companies that are going to cash in on the idea of feminism and the idea of women. The marketing, the curated statements, the hashtags–all of it will be done with the goal of convincing us to accept less and less. Instead of paid leave, affordable housing, universal healthcare, and free childcare, we’re going to get the tired trope of lady bosses leaning into a female future.
After turning this Tweet over and over in my mind, I realized that I had mentally changed the wording to, “More and more, I care less and less about the less.” For me, this Tweet evolved from a worn-out, hopeless nihilism into a call to reject bullshit half measures and actions that never move beyond representation.
This month, and every month, I'm committing to caring less and less about the less we're being offered. This month, and every month, I’m focusing on abundance, on the more and more. This month, and every month, I refuse to believe the lie that there's not enough, that imagining and demanding better is silly, naïve, or impossible. This month, and every month, I’m finding ways to celebrate women by actually caring for them.
